Five Useful Tips for House Hunting

House Hunting Tips

A lot of people I meet with tend to ask me if they are going about the home buying process the right way. If you’re a first time buyer, the hunt can be a very exciting but stressful time. I want to make your house hunting experience as easy as possible, so I’ve compiled a list of five useful tips to keep in mind while searching for a house.

  1. Get Organized. Keep a record of your house hunting research. Write down comments about the homes you view, and take note of your likes and dislikes of each property. After every viewing, offer feedback to your real estate agent. Do not hesitate to tell them what you don’t like about a home – remember that the houses do not belong to the agent and they will not take it personally!
  2. Make the Time. Let your agent know your time schedule and expectations for viewing homes. Let them know if you’d prefer viewing one, two, three or more homes in a session. This makes opening up your calendar for house hunting much more relaxing and enjoyable.
  3. Keep Your Eyes Open. Inform your agent about any new homes that caught your attention and that you’d like more information about. They could be homes you come across while viewing a certain neighborhood, or ads you find in newspapers and online.
  4. Do a Drive-By. If you prefer driving around by yourself looking at potential homes, ask your agent for a list of houses to be considered first from the outside (drive-bys). Your agent can then set up showings for the properties that appealed to you.
  5. Know Your Agent. Before doing business with your agent, it’s important to know who they represent. Some agents will only work for the seller.

Stick to these basics and you’ll find yourself in your future home in no time! If you have any questions, please email me at jsnyder@inlanta.com, or connect with me on Facebook.
